In keeping with the guidelines of the Canadian Dental Association, Woodlands Dental encourages parents to bring their children in for their first dental visit within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by the age of one, whichever comes first. During these initial appointments, our team can identify any potential issues and create a personalized care plan to provide support for healthy development and optimal oral health!

Infant Oral Health Exams

At Woodlands Dental, our team provides infant oral health assessments designed specially for babies and toddlers, in order to monitor the development of your child’s teeth and gums. Starting early with oral health exams is important in order to help us catch any concerns early on, ensuring that your child’s mouth develops properly as they grow!

Preventative Care

At Woodlands Dental, we understand that children often develop habits that can negatively affect their oral health and development. Things like thumb sucking, pacifier uses or tongue thrusting, while all normal, can affect oral health in the long run. Our team is pleased to provide habit counseling to guide children and parents in breaking these habits and promoting healthier alternatives. Early Orthodontic Assessment

Early orthodontic evaluations are crucial for identifying any alignment issues before they become more significant problems. They allow dental professionals to monitor and guide jaw development, to ensure proper alignment. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that there is enough space for permanent teeth, which improves bite function for chewing and speaking and also enhances facial symmetry. At Woodlands Dental, we recommend assessing your child’s teeth and bite by age seven, allowing us to plan any necessary interventions and help attain optimal dental development. Space Maintainers

If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely, space maintainers may be necessary to hold the space for the permanent tooth to grow in. This helps prevent misalignment that could occur if the remaining adjacent teeth move to the open space, as well as preventing other dental issues down the road. The Woodlands Dental team is here to explain the process and ensure your child is comfortable throughout their treatment. Space maintainers are custom-made for each child, made from either acrylic or metal. They look similar to a retainer, and can be fixed or removable. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate type of space maintainer for your child.
